Kristyn Koller
Hi, I am Kristyn Koller. I am the web editor for 3RS and I manage our social media presence. I am a 30-something mom to two littles who make my world go around. My husband and I met in college, but life had other ideas for us until later on. I am an IT business owner, I love being creative, and I am always up for a good physical challenge. We chose to start our homestead with my parents in 2020 and we are failing-forward as we figure out life, family and homesteading.
Awakening
It’s Spring Time, which means an awakening of the earth. Seeds bud out into plants, baby animals are being born, and our souls can’t ignore the new life. It’s inspiring and lovely. and pulls at us in a way thats hard to describe.
There is a hard truth with new life, not everything is positive. We can awaken something we wish would stay down and not everything that wakes will live. There is a purpose even for the less desirable things in life. Hurt teaches us to enjoy pleasures that much more. Life is fragile and finite, and with each new season of awakening we are changing and growing,.
In light of that, we know that what we nurture will grow. We see this on the farm, when we feed, care and love then growth follows. The lesson here, is we can chose what to nurture. The outcome is not assured, but through the nurturing we increase the odds and in turn feed our souls. This spring I am reminded of a truth: it’s important to define ourselves by the journey rather than the destination.
My hope for you, through this spring season, is that you experience gentle awakening and you are reminded of truths you hold dear.
Farm Update
Sometimes I feel like I have to pinch myself. I get home from work, and the afternoon is spent cuddling ducks, milking goats, petting chickens. Caring for the animals, caring for my kids, and my nurturing heart is overflowing. And summer, glorious summer, is coming… how could it get better?
Over the last month we have been mostly brooding chicks and ducklings. Of course, we live in Colorado, so we had false springs where most of the animals were out side or in the barn, but then we had cold snaps that forced the babies back in the mudroom. Mothers day is the magic day for us, and it’s early this year!
Another big adventure has been the baby goats and the addition of two more senior does in milk! For the last year or so we have been share holders of a local farm who has supplied us with wonderful goat milk, which has been excellent for my daughter Emma, who doesn’t tolerate cow milk and for our kefir. But alas, we are self sufficient with enough to supplement the baby goats and ourselves. We plan to have our own shares available soon. Let the goat cheese experiments begin!
Piper, our livestock guardian dog, has won over PawPaw’s heart and he works with her every day. She is learning her perimeter and boundaries, and loves playing – especially when she can run on the snow, sorry Pipe, summer is a coming.
We are looking forward to visitors this summer, to planting the garden and fencing larger areas for the animals.
